Perhaps this may be the most wide open the Class 6A Division as a whole has been in a long time in the Houston area. Through the first four weeks of the season, several Houston area high school teams have stood out as contenders, showing the potential to make a state title run. Do they have what it takes to where the crown of state champion in the state of Texas? Let’s Expose The Unexposed!!!
Typically, it has been the “North Shore Invitational,” so to speak. The Mustangs are still in the hunt after an early loss to South Oak Cliff. Senior quarterback Kaleb Maryland is one the top players in the state and leads the Mustangs offensively. However, there are several teams in the greater Houston area that have the fire power and coaching prowess that can stand toe to toe with them and just about anyone else.
Ridge Point has been a good team for years now, but this year feels a little different in a good way. They have impressive wins over Fulshear and Bridgeland.
Summer Creek looks like a juggernaut who is primed to make another deep run this year. With wins over a good Shadow Creek team and perennial HISD power, Houston Lamar, the Bulldogs are off to hot start and remain unbeaten.
Atascocita lost a close game to a top tier program in Austin Westlake, but that was without arguably the best player in Texas in running back Cardae Mack. Other than that, they are fan favorites to represent Houston in Jerry’s World in Arlington at the state championship in December.
Dickinson is 4-0 currently with only one single digit win. They have been flying under the radar, but their early non-district record proves that they can be in it for the long haul.
Other notable contenders:
– Katy Tigers
– Shadow Creek Sharks
– Klein Collins Tigers
– Willis Wildkats
– The Woodlands Highlanders
