    Tampa Recap: Players To Know

By: Nick Gradney (National Scout) @StatZ_G

DR7-Tampa tournament brought high energy and fierce competition from 8U to 18U, with teams battling all weekend to prove themselves worthy of getting to The Crown. Several squads made strong statements and could potentially shake up the current top 5 rankings after their performances over the weekend. Playmakers across every age group delivered big moments and highlight plays that kept the intensity high throughout the event. Once again, Florida proved why it remains one of the top football states in the country by showcasing their elite talent and competitive teams on a national stage. Here’s a few names who stood out mostly in Tampa.

28′ DB Darrion Bennett (@DarrionBennett) was one of the more instinctive secondary players in the tournament. Bennett plays the position with awareness, consistently reading quarterbacks and anticipating routes before they fully develop. His closing speed stands out, allowing him to close space quickly and disrupt plays that seem open at first glance. When the ball is in the air, Bennett’s timing and ball skills allow him to attack the catch point like a receiver. He shows confidence in tight coverage situations and isn’t afraid to challenge receivers at the point of attack. More importantly, he consistently makes plays on the football, turning defensive opportunities into momentum-changing moments for his team. His instincts and playmaking ability make him a defender quarterbacks must account for.

27′ WR Jonah Gonzalez (@J_Gonzalez_wr) has a tall, sturdy prototype frame that immediately catches the eye on the perimeter. He combines that size with elite technical ability, showing exceptional hands and polished route running that allow him to win consistently against defensive backs. Gonzalez moves with surprising fluidity for a bigger receiver, displaying oily hips that help him sink into breaks and separate at the top of routes. His catch radius gives quarterbacks confidence to place the ball in contested areas, knowing he has the body control to secure it. He consistently plucks the ball away from his frame and finishes catches with authority. Once the ball is in his hands, he quickly transitions into a playmaker capable of turning routine receptions into big gains. Gonzalez has the tools and production of a receiver who can impact games in multiple ways. Keep him on your radar.

31′ QB Jace Vorlicky (@JaceVorlickyQB1) is already showing impressive command for a young signal caller. His greatest strength is his precision, delivering accurate throws that allow receivers to stay in stride and maximize yardage after the catch. Vorlicky also shows an advanced ability to work through his progressions, calmly scanning the field and finding the open target rather than forcing throws. His decision-making reflects a quarterback who understands timing and spacing within the offense. One of his standout qualities is the chemistry he has with his receivers, often anticipating where they will be before they even complete their routes. That connection helps him consistently keep drives alive. With continued development, Vorlicky projects as a quarterback who can lead an offense efficiently and confidently.

28′ QB Giorgio Baker Jr. brings a commanding presence to the offense with his strong arm and steady demeanor. He has the ability to drive the football into tight windows and stretch defenses vertically when opportunities present themselves. What separates him mentally is his ability to get “football amnesia” after mistakes – quickly resetting and moving on to the next play without hesitation. That mindset allows him to maintain confidence and composure even in high-pressure moments. In the pocket, he remains poised and controlled, showing patience while allowing routes to develop downfield. He manages the pocket well and keeps his eyes downfield rather than panicking under pressure. Baker’s arm talent and mental toughness make him a quarterback capable of leading an offense through adversity.

28′ WR Jashaad Scott is one of the most explosive slot threats I saw in Tampa – thanks to his lightning speed and ability to create instant separation. Operating primarily from the slot, Scott constantly stresses defenses with quick releases and sudden bursts through the middle of the field. His acceleration allows him to turn short catches into big plays in a hurry. During the DR7-Tampa 15U Championship game, he had one of the most memorable moments of the tournament where he hauled in a spectacular one-handed touchdown catch in the back of the end zone. It was a highlight-worthy play that immediately erupted the crowd. The play showcased his body control, focus, and ability to make difficult catches look effortless. With his speed and knack for big moments, this kid can be a dynamic weapon whenever he steps on the field.

12U WR Autonomy “Auto” Brown, the son of NFL legend **Antonio Brown, is already carving out a name for himself as a dangerous young playmaker. Brown shows the traits of a big-play receiver, consistently threatening defenses with his ability to stretch the field vertically. His elite hands allow him to secure difficult passes, while his polished deep route running helps him gain separation down the field just like his pops. Brown tracks the football naturally over his shoulder, a skill that makes him particularly dangerous on long throws. Beyond his athletic ability, he consistently shows up in big moments, delivering clutch receptions when his team needs them most. His confidence and composure stand out for a player at such a young age. If his trajectory continues, Auto could be a name football fans hear for many years to come.

12U WR King Howard (@Kinghowardat) brings a big-body presence to the offense that creates serious matchup problems for defenders. His size alone provides an unfair advantage, allowing him to shield defenders and win contested catches with ease. Despite his larger frame, Howard moves with impressive fluidity, running routes smoothly, and adjusting his body to the football. He demonstrates strong concentration at the catch point and consistently shows he’s a true hands catcher. That allows quarterbacks to trust him in tight coverage situations. Howard also understands how to position his body to create leverage against smaller defenders. With his combination of size, control, and reliable hands, he has the makings of a dominant outside receiver.

12U WR Lyfe Wroten, the son of former NBA player Tony Wroten, brings high-level athletic traits to the football field. This kids next-level athleticism and speed immediately stand out when he lines up on the outside. He accelerates quickly and has the ability to separate from defenders once he hits the open field. His stride and explosiveness allow him to consistently threaten defenses outside the numbers, where he can stretch the field vertically. As he continues to develop physically and technically, his ceiling as a receiver appears extremely high. Coaches and scouts have already taken notice of the flashes he’s showing at a young age. Wroten is a name to keep on your radar as he grows into one of the more intriguing young athletes in the game.
