Breaking Barriers: Women In Sports feat. Ashton Washington

By: Nick Gradney (National Scout) @StatZ_G

Ashton Washington is someone who has been a tremendous aspiration to me for several years. In ways, she’s one of my mentors in the game. We both have roots with The Old Coach. Her drive and passion for football is contagious and I take tidbits from her any time I can. Oftentimes, I heard her say the phrase “Chop Wood Carry Water” and it stuck with me as not only a head football coach in high school, but it can be applied to everyday life as well. Staying even keeled no matter the awards, praise or accolades you do or do not receive is important because the job is never finished. Here’s a deep dive into the successful career of Ashton and her path to greatness.

Ashton Washington is a Houston, Texas native, who has engraved her name in the records and created a powerful lane for herself in the world of football and currently serves as the Player Personnel Coordinator for the Chicago Bears. Her love for the game began around the age of 12 or 13 by watching her younger brother Parker Washington (NFL Wide Receiver) play flag football while her father coached from the sidelines. What started as her just observing the game, soon turned into a deep passion for the strategy, leadership, and intensity of the sport. At the same time, Ashton was equally inspired off the field, submerging herself in books about historical leaders who changed the world. Those stories planted a seed, pushing her to envision a future where she could also make an everlasting impact. By the time she turned 18, Ashton made a decision to pursue a career in football, which is a bold choice in a field where women have traditionally not been represented. Her journey would soon become a blueprint and inspiration for perseverance and purpose. This is a story where vision meets opportunity.

Ashton’s early career is detailed with a wide range of experiences that helped sharpen her football sagacity and expand her as a network and eventually a name of recognition. She gained valuable exposure working with platforms such as theoldcoach.com, Nike Opening events, and the Under Armour All-American Game. Each opportunity allowed her to evaluate talent, understand player development, and learn the ins and outs of scouting at a high level. She also contributed her skills to Rivals, 247 Sports, and 7v7 circuits, building a reputation for having a good eye and strong football knowledge. Those roles were not just stepping stones, but more so proving grounds where Ashton consistently demonstrated her value as an asset and her work ethic. Her experience extended into the pros, with time in the XFL in the business and game day operations area, and also the NCAA with Illinois as the director of football operations. Every stop along the way added another layer to her understanding of the game. By the time she reached the Chicago Bears organization, she had already built a résumé deeply rooted in credibility and consistency.

What separates Ashton Washington is not just her résumé, but her purpose-driven approach to the game. She is committed to opening doors for others who look like her, with the same mindset, ensuring that her success creates opportunities for the next generation. Ashton understands that representation matters, especially in a sport where particularly women of color are often overlooked. Her mission goes beyond personal achievement — it is about cl generating access for others. She mentors and supports young women who aspire to work in sports, offering advice to assist in hopes of breaking down barriers. Ashton’s belief in lifting others is a notable part of her identity and leadership style. She recognizes that true impact is measured by how many quality people you bring along with you. In doing so, she is helping reshape the landscape of football from the inside out.

A shining example of her commitment to empowerment is the Ashton Washington Women of Color Annual Scholarship. Ashton awarded a $1,000 scholarship to a young scholar, Nayla McClure, reinforcing her dedication to investing in future leaders. This scholarship is more than financial support — it is a symbol of belief, opportunity, and encouragement. It sends a message that there is space for women of color in sports and beyond. Ashton is intentionally building a legacy that extends far beyond her profession. By pouring into others, she’s ensuring that her impact will be felt for years to come. Her actions demonstrate that leadership is not just about position, but also influence and acts of service. This initiative is one of many ways she continues to give back.

Working in football as a woman requires resilience, confidence, and having thick skin, and Ashton Washington embodies all three. In a male-dominated sport, she has learned to navigate challenges while staying true to her vision. Her knowledge of the game is undeniable, and her ability to evaluate talent sets her apart as a respected scout in the game. Ashton brings a unique perspective that enhances decision-making and strengthens organizational success. The presence of women in sports is critical because it promotes diversity, equality, and innovation. She’s a revolutionary. She is no longer just part of the game — she’s now helping evolve it. As a trailblazer, Ashton Washington continues to inspire young women to step confidently into spaces wherever their heart is, proving that football is indeed for everyone!
