Big Time Ballers: DR7 Houston, TX

By: Nick Gradney (National Scout) @StatZ_G

29′ WR Kam Ballard (Battlecats 15U) had a very impressive outing at DR7 – Houston, TX this past weekend. Ballard displayed good route running and great hands every possession. I can’t recall a time where he wasn’t open. When the quarterback looked his way, you can expect that to be a completed catch. Ballard is a tall, well put together athlete that will continue to grow into a mismatch on the perimeter for corners.

27′ WR Zacaidyn Weathersby @ZacaidynW (Battlecats 15U) is a big time playmaker at the wide receiver spot. This kid had a couple plays that made me get out of my seat to pay closer attention to him. Weathersby have strong hands and is athletic enough to adjust his body to make difficult catches. He was consistent throughout the entire tournament and stood out amongst other elite talent in his age group. Zacaidyn helped his team capture the 15U championship with his superb skill on the outside. Keep an eye on this kid in the near future.

28′ S Terrance Freeman (Louisiana Mudbugs 15U) was a savant in the secondary this past weekend at DR7 – Houston, TX. Freeman was all over the field and made his presence felt with his athleticism. This kid is already showing leadership qualities on the gridiron at such a young age. He was very talkative in between plays and making sure his teammates understood their assignment. It takes a different level of bravery to stand out in that way. Freeman was calling out plays based on the formation of the defense and played it to perfection. His coverage skills was nothing short of amazing as he stayed around the ball at all times. Terrance will be a force going forward if he keeps it up and I look forward to watching him play live in the near future.

28′ ATH Julius Brown @Juliuspbrown (Louisiana Mudbugs 15U) is a pure technician. His crisp route running ability is advanced for a young athlete. He have a quick release off the line of scrimmage and he gets out of his breaks to create separation very well. He plays mostly in the slot but he’s built like a running back which makes him a future college product. Being able to catch out of the backfield is very important to any program out there. Brown is predominantly a hands catcher and have nice speed to match. He was a workhorse this past weekend, oftentimes catching multiple passes in a row on the same drive. Brown can run every route and doesn’t shy away from competition.

26′ WR Eli Lancaster @EliLancaster4 (Texas Tap 18U) is a DR7 veteran at this point. Lancaster is a very well polished receiver. He has the speed to turn a 5 yard hitch to a 75 yard touchdown. This kid is one of the most underrated prospects in the Houston area. Lancaster is explosive in the open field and takes no plays off. This is a player that you have to know where he’s at on the field at all times because aas soon as the ball is snapped, it’ll look like he’s shot out of a cannon. Lancaster may be best suited to play inside due to acceleration and ability to work in space but make no mistake about it, he can be a threat outside the numbers as well. Eli averaged over 18 yards per reception during his junior campaign and looks to have a breakout season as an upcoming senior in 2025 for The Woodlands Highlanders.

31′ DB Dawson Thomas @MouseDawson (TTG 12U) was a pleasant surprise to watch this young athlete showcase his talents in DR7 – Houston, TX. Dawson is a quick, twitchy defensive back with really good instincts and ball skills. He can play anywhere in the secondary. One thing I noticed was how quickly he covered ground from sideline to sideline. With his ability to play the ball while in the air, Thomas can make for a good wide receiver as well. He made several game impacting plays during the entire tournament and contributed in a major way to his teams success. Dawson have long arms to disrupt passes and he forced quarterbacks into inaccurate passes. This kid is only in the 6th so the sky is the limit. I’m looking forward to watching him for years to come.
