The DR7 Road to the Crown 15U bracket was loaded with standout performers, but my top defensive prospect award goes to Artis Thomas III, representing powerhouse Miami Norland and competing with the 15U champion TMS7v7.

Artis immediately stood out due to his physical profile and playmaking presence on the back end. He owns the height, length, and wingspan that project cleanly into a what a prototypical high-end safety’s frame resembles. What separates him beyond measurables, however, is his passion for the game. His energy is contagious, and it is obvious football matters deeply to him.

During live play, Thomas recorded back-to-back interception returns for touchdowns, showcasing excellent vision, confidence in his reads, and a decisive trigger when the ball is in the air. He drove through the football with purpose and displayed legitimate top-end speed once in the open field. In the following game, he added another pick-six, playing with visible joy and confidence all the way to the end zone. His ability to trust what he sees and finish plays stood out consistently.

Report.

Artis Thomas III is a rangy, middle-of-the-field safety with positional flexibility to play both safety spots and slide down into nickel packages. He has a long wingspan, violent finishing ability, and an explosive downhill trigger. He displays strong “above-the-rim” ball skills and plays with confidence in zone coverage.

Thomas III shows natural pattern-matching instincts with a true center-fielder mentality. His high football IQ is evident in how he understands leverage, spacing, and pursuit angles. Comfortable and effective in deep-half and middle-of-the-field responsibilities. Tracks the ball well and closes with intent.

Thomas III is a high-ceiling prospect whose upside will expand significantly with continued physical development. Added functional strength and speed training will elevate his game even further. He is young for his classification and should naturally continue to grow into his frame.

I would like to see additional live reps against elite route runners to further evaluate his man-coverage transitions. Continued refinement in backpedal mechanics and short-area change of direction will unlock another level of consistency.

Conclusion.

I am a firm believer in the talent and trajectory of Artis Thomas III. His tools, instincts, competitive edge, and love for the game check every box you look for in a defensive prospect. I look forward to tracking his offseason development and seeing him suit up this fall at powerhouse Miami Norland.

Reach out to his coaches, you will not be disappointed. This young man is just getting started, and his best football is still ahead of him.
