Kiona Ki’Lolo Westerlund is not just another name in women’s flag football; she’s a trailblazer. With a career that includes over 500 receptions and multiple gold medals, Kiona has made her mark at a young age. Her journey is a testament to hard work, dedication, and passion for the sport.
From Humble Beginnings to Stardom:
Kiona reflects on her early days, recalling, “I was terrible… but there was a little tryout during COVID… I made it because there were only seven girls that went to tryouts.” Her determination and love for the game propelled her to success.
By her senior year, she had the opportunity to work with ESPN and even feature in the Super Bowl commercial, showcasing the rapid growth and recognition of women’s flag football.
The Importance of Family:
Family has been a cornerstone of Kilolo’s journey. “My parents have always been so supportive… they pushed us to be the best versions of ourselves every single day,” she shares. This support system has been crucial in her rise to prominence.
Navigating Fame & Criticism:
With success comes its challenges. Westerlund acknowledges the mixed reactions from peers, saying, “With success also comes hate… I was getting supporters, but then I was also getting people saying I was overrated.” Her resilience shines through as she embraces both sides of fame.
A Lasting Memory:
When asked about a memorable moment at Liberty High School, Kiona says, “We won state that year… it was just a surreal feeling.” This victory solidified her passion for the sport and her commitment to excellence.
