Richmond Randle opened its 2026 season with a statement, defeating South Oak Cliff 20-14 in a matchup that carried plenty of unfinished business. The Lions entered the game looking to respond after South Oak Cliff defeated them in last year’s state championship game. With both programs having become familiar opponents on the biggest stages, this Week 1 matchup felt more like a playoff game than a season opener. Randle came out with a physical mindset and never backed away from the challenge. By the final whistle, the Lions had earned an important victory and some early-season bragging rights.
The biggest difference-maker was senior running back Landen Williams-Callis, who immediately looked like one of the most dangerous players in Texas high school football. Williams-Callis consistently found running lanes and turned them into significant gains throughout the night. He finished with more than 200 rushing yards and scored twice, giving the Randle offense the production it needed against a talented South Oak Cliff defense. His ability to stay patient behind his blockers before exploding through openings kept the Golden Bears defense under pressure. Every time Randle needed a big play, Williams-Callis seemed capable of creating it.
For Williams-Callis, the performance was about more than statistics. He had another opportunity to face the team that had stopped Randle’s championship run the previous season, and he responded with one of the strongest performances of his career. Rather than allowing the previous loss to linger, he attacked the game with confidence and physicality. His running style gave Randle a consistent presence on the ground and helped control the tempo. He also showed that his impact goes beyond simply carrying the football, contributing in other ways when the Lions needed him. It was the type of performance expected from a player entering his senior season with major expectations.
Randle’s defense deserves just as much credit for the victory. South Oak Cliff has built a reputation for being physical and explosive, but the Lions repeatedly forced the Golden Bears into difficult situations. Randle’s defense played with discipline, made tackles in space and delivered several important stops when South Oak Cliff threatened to make a comeback. After the Golden Bears pulled closer late in the game, the Lions refused to panic. They finished the night by protecting their lead and making the necessary plays to secure the win. The combination of Williams-Callis offensive production and the defensive toughness proved to be the difference.
The victory sends an early message about what Richmond Randle hopes to accomplish this season. Moving into Class 5A Division I brings a new set of challenges, but the Lions showed immediately that they still expect to compete at a high level. Williams-Callis has already established himself as the centerpiece of the offense, and his opening performance gives Randle plenty of confidence moving forward. More importantly, the Lions demonstrated that they can win a close, physical game against a proven opponent. If this opening night is any indication, Richmond Randle has no intention of letting its championship aspirations fade, and Landen Williams-Callis appears ready to lead the way.
