Katy Tigers football is starting to look like Katy Tigers football again. Through the first four games of 2026, the Tigers have opened with a perfect 4-0 record and are 2-0 in District 22-6A. They have already taken down Atascocita, Dickinson, Tompkins and Jordan, showing consistency on both sides of the ball. The early stretch has put Katy right back into the conversation among the Houston area’s top programs.
After last season ended with a heartbreaking 38-37 playoff loss to Summer Creek, this group entered 2026 with something to prove. So far, the response has been convincing. One of the biggest storylines has been senior quarterback Mason Hartwell stepping into the starting role. Hartwell gives the Tigers a dynamic presence behind center with the ability to make plays with both his arm and his legs.
His performance against Atascocita immediately showed what he could bring to the offense, as he rushed for 175 yards and two touchdowns in the 28-17 victory. That mobility adds another layer to an offense already built around physical football. Katy’s rushing attack has continued to put pressure on opposing defenses and has helped the Tigers control the tempo of games.
Senior running back Tony Manuel has also emerged as a major weapon, finding the end zone eight times through the opening four games. Up front, Oklahoma commit Isaac Coughran has helped anchor an offensive line that has consistently created room for the running game. The defense has matched that physicality by forcing turnovers and making opponents work for every possession.
What stands out most is how comfortable this team looks playing the brand of football Katy has been known for over the years. There is no need to reinvent the identity when the formula continues to work. Hartwell’s emergence simply gives the Tigers another way to attack defenses that are already trying to deal with their physicality.
The season is still young, and tougher challenges are waiting deeper into district play. But four games in, Katy has made one thing clear: the Tigers aren’t rebuilding their reputation — they’re reminding everyone why it was there in the first place. For now, Katy is back near the top of the greater Houston area football landscape, and this version of the Tigers looks like they plan to stay there.
