Beyond The StatZ: Feat. Todd Dericho

    By: Nick Gradney (@StatZ_G)

Todd Dericho (@ToddDericho_) is a senior defensive back for the KIPP Sunnyside Senators in Houston, TX. Dericho can play outside the numbers as well as the nickel. However, he may be best suited to play safety at the next level. Todd have a an edge to his game that’s much needed to play defense. The pit bull-like mentality he possesses brings out the competitive fire in his teammates and opponents. I recently caught up with Todd and asked questions about his football background. Check it out.

I want to know your first memory playing football as a kid.

My first memory playing football was going to my first practice and actually not knowing anybody and how to play football but I eventually made life friends

Who is the most influential person(s) in your life right now that keeps you level-headed?

The Johnson’s and my parents really the whole coaching staff. They really trust and believed me and gave me the confidence and opportunity to improve and be the best leader I could be.

What are your game day rituals?

I usually listen to YTB fatt or nba yb and I pray with doodie and rj

What’s the hardest part about being a student athlete these days with social media being a heavy influence?

Nothing honestly, I can adapt to any and everything.

How would you best describe your playing style and what’s your favorite thing about your position?

I’m me. I don’t compare myself to anybody. I want to be the best Todd Dericho. I play aggressive, hard and give my best.

Which pro player(s) (current or retired) you relate to the most and why?

I feel like I play like Chris Gonzalez from Oregon because he’s a db that can hit and cover.

How have any of your high school coaches played an important role in your life?

Every single one of them, especially Coach Johnson because I relate to him and we are  in sync. That’s my guy, he tells me when I’m wrong and right and stands behind me with every decision.

What are your individual goals as a player?

To be a leader and the face of our school. Also to be the first to go the furthest in football.

If you wasn’t an athlete, what could you see yourself doing?

Probably just being regular and having a 9-5 working job.

What would you like for recruiters to know about you?

I’d love for them to know that I’m authentic, consistent, a fast learner and someone who puts school before sports.

In your own words, define success.

Success to me is obtaining your goal in life and paving the way for others.
